COMPETITIVE ACQUISITION AUDIOCONFERENCE TO SHARE PHYSICIAN PARTICIPATION DATA, PHARMA/BIOTECH TAKEAWAYS FOR NEW MEDICARE PROGRAM
-- June 07 2005 -- 90-minute audioconference hosted by ePharmaceuticals, a div of HCPro, Inc.

MARBLEHEAD MA USA -- MEDICAL INDUSTRY E-MAIL NEWS SERVICE(TM) -- MAY 04 2005 -- The competitive acquisition program (CAP), a provision of the Medicare Modernization Act, will shift the financial risk of drug purchasing, billing and delivery, from physicians to specialty pharmacies, when it becomes effective on Jan 01 2006. CAP will pose new threats and opportunities for pharmaceutical and biotech firms, regarding use of injectable and infusible drugs and biologicals.

Learn more about CAP in the 90-minute audioconference, Competitive Acquisition: Analysis & Takeaways for Pharma & Biotech, presented by ePharmaceuticals. The program, which features a 5-person panel, is June 7, at 1 pm EDT - just days after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is expected to release the final CAP rules.

"The days of treatment without co-payment are probably gone for good, so the CAP - even though the program may initially have a limited scope - could be the future. This is an opportunity for pharma and biotech," says Bryan Cote, Executive Editor of ePharmaceuticals and Moderator of the audioconference. "To capitalize, the industry needs to learn more about how specialty pharmacies will operate under CAP and the potential issues that CAP presents in the delivery of their products."

Under CAP, physicians can select vendors, such as specialty pharmacies, to assume responsibility for drug purchasing, delivery, co-pay collection and distribution. Participating physicians who administer drugs in their offices will no longer bill Medicare directly for the drugs; they will, however, continue to bill Medicare for the administration portion.

During the audioconference, Cote will present exclusive survey data which projects physician participation by specialty. (Participation in CAP is voluntary.)

THE SPEAKER PANEL

The speaker panel includes Kevin Barnett, Sr VP, Campbell Alliance, a pharmaceutical and biotech management consulting firm; Karen Freeman, Executive VP, Biologics Inc., a specialty oncology pharmacy in the US; Thomas Barr, Executive Director of Oncology Metrics and Past-President of the Administrators in Oncology/Hematology Assembly; and Nicholas Opalich, Managing Partner of Strategic Health Partners, LLC.

"This event will focus on physicians' participation in CAP, their understanding of it and the role specialty pharmacies will take," explains Cote. "The CAP is controversial and oncologists are resisting it, but there's interest from other specialties. Pharma and biotech will need to refocus their marketing and sales efforts as a result of CAP."
