IPMI is a platform management specification. It is an embedded management subsystem within a hardware platform responsible for monitoring platform components and sensors, checking inventory, logging of events and remote management, diagnosis and recovery. IPMI is widely used in the servermarket and has also established its presence in other areas, such as Telecom and storage hardware.
Broad industry support coupled with IPMI capabilities have made it themost widely adopted specification for simplifying the way IT manages servers.
With IPMI, server administrators can realize a standardized method, completely interoperable with different system components, operating systems (OS), and platforms, to perform server management functions such as remote management and recovery during all phases of a system lifecycle: from Pre-OS and system boot through to operating system (OS) running, to OS unresponsive.
All servers that began shipping late last year are IPMI-enabled.
Avocent developed the IPMI firmware that is shipping on many OEM servers.
Avocent developed an IPMI proxy appliance, the DSI5100, that allows IT administrators to monitor IPMI data on their individual servers through Avocent DSView 3 management software.
Avocent DSView 3 management software can manage KVM over IP, serial over IP, virtual media, and external power sources too.
